America’s Obesity Rate On The Rise
According to a report released on Tuesday by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the obesity rate for the year 2009 was 27%. This is up from approximately 25.5% in 2007.When one has a Body Mass Index of greater than or equal to 30%, then the person is considered obese by the standard definition used by the CDC.
Using this definition a 5 foot 4 woman who weighs greater than 173 pounds or a 5 foot 10 man who weighs more than 208 pounds is considered obese.
Non Hispanic black women and Hispanics had the highest obesity rate at 30.7%.
Nine states had obesity rates of at least 30%. They were: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Mississippi.
Only three states had obesity rates of over 30% in 2007. These states were: Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
The results were based on a survey of approximately 400,000 individuals who were simply asked their height and weight.
