Today, the Seventh-day Adventist denomination will begin its 10 day world session in atlanta Ga.

The world session is a time when Seventh-day Adventist delegates, as well as members, clergy, and friends meet for business and inspiration.  The session takes place once every five years.

During this session, the church will vote for its top leadership for the next five years.  In addition, there will be a number of issues.

The first thing that will happen at the session, according to the Adventist News Network, is to elect the church leadership.  This will include the election of the president and other directors of the denomination as well as the leaders of the 13 world regions (called Divisions).

After the elections there will be time for reports from various areas in the world.  In addition, there are some significant agenda items that the church must address.

One such item seeks to put in safeguards to protect the youth of the church.  The session will vote on adding language to address who can work with youth as well as how to handle the church membership of sexual predators.

There are also updates on how future elections of leaders will take place.

Also the “(d)elegates will approve several recently formed union of churches at Session, as well as consider whether to expand the structure’s use” said the church in a Adventist News Network News Bulletin. Currently the World Adventist Church is split up into five levels of World, Division, Union Conference, Local Conference, and Local Church.  The Union of Churches replaces the Union Conference and Local Conference Level with one level called a “Union of Churches.”
