United States World Cup Soccer Hopes Come Down To Game With Algeria
The U.S. World Cup hopes ride on one game. Today the American team will play Algeria at the World Cup to earn a spot in the final 16 teams.
The United States moves forward with a victory. A loss will bring back the memories of the loss to Ghana in 2006 that put the U.S. out of that competition.
This year’s World Cup began with a 1-1 tie against England. Then there was that hard fought 2-2 tie when it appeared that the U.S. had beaten Slovenia with a late goal by Maurice Edu. However, referee Koman Coulibaly of Mali called back the goal in what has been considered a terrible call around the world. Coulibaly called back the goal without givine an explanation. This is allowed under the FIFA rules. Removal of that goal ensured the tie.
Algeria must win to advance, but the U.S. could advance on a tie if England loses its game today against Slovenia and England does not score more than two goals than the U.S. If that happens, Slovenia would advance.
